From the recordings You before Me and New Releases

I've determined that I am at a stage of my life where my goals have changed. I just need to stay ahead of my decline. Chronic Pain in my joints and back. Heart adn Kidney diseases. The typical aging changes with memory, hearing and balance.

With that in mind, there are disciplines I must incorporate into my day to help me stay ahead of my decline.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The mirror's getting honest now
It doesn't hide a thing
A little more gray around the edges
A little less of spring

The knees complain on rainy days
The back speaks up at night
But every morning when I wake
I still lace these old shoes tight

[Chorus]
I'm trying to stay ahead of my decline
One more walk, one more song, one more line
I know the clock is winning
I can hear it keeping time
But I'm trying to stay ahead of my decline

[Verse 2]
The young folks move at lightning speed
Their world spins fast and loud
I'm learning all these new inventions
Just to keep up with the crowd

Some days I feel a hundred years
Some days I feel nineteen
The difference is the people near
And the places that I've been

[Chorus]
I'm trying to stay ahead of my decline
One more laugh, one more dream, one more climb
I know the road grows narrower
With every passing sign
But I'm trying to stay ahead of my decline

[Bridge]
I've lost a lot, but I'm still here
That's a truth I've come to know
I've buried dreams and said goodbye
To people I loved so

The years I spent building a life
Have faded from view with time
The work that filled my hands and heart
Now lives in an old man's mind

I'm not asking for another youth
Just enough time to feel
One more sunrise, one more hug
One more memory that's real

[Final Chorus]
I'm trying to stay ahead of my decline
Not outrun it, just stay close behind
Finding little pieces of tomorrow
One day at a time

And when winter finally finds me
I hope it sees a man who tried
To stay ahead of his decline

[Outro]
One more walk...
One more song...
Still trying to stay ahead of my decline.
One day at a time
