From the recordings Memories of Sparky and New Releases
My 36 year old son and dear friend died suddenly on MAY 5 2026. He suffered from a bilateral Pulmonary Embolism, which I can only hope he died peacefully in his sleep. The lyrics tell some of his story, but there is so much more. He is missed.
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
You were woven through the fabric
Of every ordinary day,
A late-night call, a foolish joke,
A clip you had to send my way.
We talked about the little things,
And things we couldn’t name,
You carried half my history,
You carried half my name.
[Pre-Chorus]
The world decided who you were
Before you had a choice,
But I knew the heart behind the scars,
I knew the real boy’s voice.
[Chorus]
My namesake, my friend, my boy,
You were trouble, truth, and joy.
You fell down hard, you stood back up,
When life had nearly had enough.
They saw the record, I saw the man,
Still doing everything he can.
Thirty-six years could not contain
The fire you carried with my name.
My namesake, my friend, my boy—
You left behind a deafening void.
[Verse 2]
You were running on a hamster wheel,
No matter how you tried,
The punishment outweighed the crime,
And mercy stepped aside.
A label placed upon you young
Became a life-long chain,
But you kept working, kept on fighting,
Kept walking through the pain.
You showed up for your children,
Though the road was never fair,
You gave them every piece you had—
Your strength, your love, your care.
You made mistakes like all of us,
But yours were carved in stone,
While those who passed their judgment
Never walked your road alone.
[Chorus]
My namesake, my friend, my boy,
You were trouble, truth, and joy.
You fell down hard, you stood back up,
When life had nearly had enough.
They saw the record, I saw the man,
Still doing everything he can.
Thirty-six years could not contain
The fire you carried with my name.
My namesake, my friend, my boy—
You left behind a deafening void.
[Verse 3]
Baseball lived inside your blood,
From player on the field,
To coaching kids who looked at you
Like heroes should be real.
Then behind the plate you called the game,
Still grinning through it all,
A grown man with a younger spirit
Chasing one more ball.
Some children saw an idol,
Someone larger than his scars,
You taught them how to take a swing
And reach beyond the bars.
You gave them more than baseball—
You made them feel they could,
Because beneath the weight you carried,
You were always something good.
[Bridge]
Maybe all that constant hurting
Was your body’s warning cry,
Blood clots moving in the shadows,
Hidden deep inside.
You needed care you couldn’t reach,
The cost became a wall,
And the system built to heal you
Barely caught you when you’d fall.
You should have had more answers.
You should have had more time.
You should not have had to measure
What your life was worth in dimes.
Now I replay every conversation,
Every joke and every plan,
Searching for the missing moment
When I might have understood the man.
[Final Chorus]
My namesake, my friend, my boy,
You were struggle, love, and joy.
You fought a fight few people knew,
And somehow kept your spirit true.
They saw the past—I saw your heart,
The way you fought for one more start.
Thirty-six years was far too few
For everything still left in you.
My namesake, my friend, my son,
Your final inning came too young.
But every child you helped believe,
And every laugh you left with me,
Will keep you here in some small way—
Inside my heart, inside my name.
[Outro]
You were in my life each day,
And somehow you still are.
My namesake…
My friend…
My boy.
