From the recording You before Me

I once knew a daughter who was very pretty, however she shared a trait with her mother that her mother was embarrassed by. Her nose was on the larger side. I never saw this as anything that made her less pretty. Her mother continually spoke of this and told her that she would get a nose reduction surgery and pay for the daughters as well. I tried to tell her I cared for her just the way she was. After the surgery, she became a different person. Her nose was smaller, her sweet spirit was removed.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
She grows up in a house made of mirrors,
Every reflection a lesson in fear.
Momma sees flaws where there's laughter and light,
Paints her own sorrow in words that aren't right.
"Stand up straighter, hide what you lack,"
She learns to be quiet, to never talk back.

[Chorus]
But I am more than broken glass,
More than stitches, scars that last.
You tried to change the skin I'm in,
But beauty's deep, it comes from within.
Momma, can't you see?
The heart is what makes me free.

[Verse 2]
White walls, cold hands in a waiting room,
Promises whispered, "You'll be perfect soon."
Doctor measures what the world can't show,
Trying to fix what you don't really know.
Nose marked with ink, you say, "They'll make it small,"
Dreaming of profiles that fit in your hall.
Wish you'd seen my courage, my grin,
Instead of the places you thought I'd been thin.

[Bridge]
Momma, your worries became my own,
I carried your burdens, felt alone.
But now I'm learning to let them go,
To love my body, let my spirit grow.
Your voice fades—mine grows strong,
I'm finding where I belong.

[Chorus]
I am more than broken glass,
More than stitches, scars that last.
You tried to change the skin I'm in,
But beauty's deep, it comes from within.
Momma, can't you see?
The heart is what makes me free.

[Outro]
Someday you'll notice the child you raised
Is building her strength in the sunlight's blaze.
I forgive you, I set me free—
Broken reflections no more; I am free.
